The pediatric oncology departments in Bucharest treat the greatest number of children with cancer in the country. They are national reference\u00a0<\/span>centers<\/span>.<\/span>
\nAmong these, only the Bucharest Oncology Institute \u2013 the largest pediatric oncology department in Romania from a total of 13 departments \u2013 treats over 150 children from the 400\u00a0new cases reported annually in the National Child Cancer Registry in Romania.\u00a0 According to the same source, a third of the solid tumors appearing in children are treated here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The support we provide for these departments was established following a period of volunteering within the Bucharest Oncology Institute and the Marie S. Curie Emergency Children\u2019s Hospital in Bucharest, where we identified the most stringent needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Modernization of the department and equipment with all the necessary medical devices;<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Supporting the social assistance services,by employing a social worker<\/strong>:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    • Assessing the patients’ and their families’ social needs and offering support;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Informing regarding the rights of the special\u00a0needs\u00a0persons, in case of death, transportation, etc.;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Communication with other institutions such as The County Department of Social Assistant Services and Child Welfare, Town Halls, Health Insurance Authorities;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Scheduling patients for periodical medical check-ups (RMN, CT, surgery, radiotherapy, etc.);<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Counseling regarding obtaining death certificates and organizing transport;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Approaching and communicating with associations that are active in the area of pediatric oncology;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Requests for emergency help;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Social surveys;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Transport to other institutions \u2013 The County Department of Social Assistant Services and Child Welfare, Health Insurance Authorities, other hospitals, etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      1. Implementing the Toy Closet<\/strong>\u2013 the existence of a closet periodically supplied with new toys collected from donors through media campaigns.
