Scholarships and allowances for families with sick children
Two forms of support you can apply for: the social scholarship on medical grounds, which does not take family income into account, and the Family Support Allowance.
IN BRIEF
What you need to know in ten seconds
Medical social scholarship
Apply to the scholarship committee at the school where the child is enrolled.
When to apply for the scholarship
In the first 20 working days of each semester.
Family Support Allowance
Register at the town hall of the locality where the family has its domicile or residence.
The difference between them
The medical scholarship does not depend on income. The Family Support Allowance is granted only to low-income families.
SOCIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship on medical grounds
The least known of these rights, precisely because it is not means-tested.
On what basis it is granted
On the basis of the certificate issued by the specialist doctor (type A5) and endorsed by the family doctor or the school medical office doctor, or on the basis of the disability degree certificate, without being conditional on the family’s net monthly income.
How to apply
Adult pupils or the parents, appointed legal guardians or legal representatives of minor pupils submit an application to the scholarship award committee at the school, together with the documents proving entitlement to the social assistance scholarship.
Deadline: the first 20 working days of each semester.
FAMILY SUPPORT ALLOWANCE
Support for low-income families
The Family Support Allowance is a form of support for low-income families who are raising and caring for children up to 18 years of age.
Who can receive it
- A family consisting of husband, wife and the children in their care — complementary allowance
- A family consisting of a single person and the children in their care — single-parent allowance
Eligibility conditions
The allowance is granted on the basis of an application and a sworn statement, accompanied by supporting documents on the family’s composition, its income and, where applicable, school attendance by the children in their care.
The documents are registered at the town hall of the locality in whose territorial area the family has its domicile or residence. To decide the application, a social inquiry is carried out at the family’s domicile or, where applicable, residence.
How the right is established
The right to the allowance and its amount are established by written order of the mayor, and the right is granted starting with the month following registration of the application.
To check that the conditions for granting it are still met, social inquiries are carried out every 12 months or whenever needed.
Beneficiaries’ obligations
The allowance holder must periodically, after the right has been established, submit a sworn statement on the family’s composition and the income earned by its members.
Dates to remember
Three dates that decide whether you receive support on time.
20 working days
The deadline for submitting the scholarship application, at the start of each semester.
The following month
The Family Support Allowance is granted starting with the month after the application is registered.
Every 12 months
The interval at which the social inquiry is repeated, or whenever needed.
